Extend a clip with AI Extend and preview before you apply

A shot that ends a beat too early leaves you with a choice: cut away or find more footage. AI Extend adds a third option. It renders a continuation from the clip's own last frame, and you decide whether it joins the cut.
Extend a clip
- Find a video clip on the main video track of the timeline.
- Click the Clip options button in the clip's top-right corner and choose AI Extend.
- Choose a duration. The dialog offers 4s, 6s and 8s, the lengths the extending model supports.
- Edit the prompt, or leave the default, "Continue naturally." Describe what happens next.
- Click Generate.
The dialog notes that the render continues from the clip's own picture alone, with no other tracks or overlays. The picture keeps the clip's crop, pan and color grade. The render takes a minute or two.
It works on real footage as well as on AI clips. Any video clip on the main track can be extended.
Preview before you apply
When the render finishes, the dialog plays it as a preview and says it is not on the timeline yet. You have three choices:
- Apply inserts the continuation as a new clip right after the original. Later clips shift to make room. If the original had a transition into the next clip, that transition moves to the new boundary. The whole insert is one undo step.
- Regenerate renders another continuation and leaves the timeline untouched.
- Discard closes the dialog and keeps the timeline as it was.
An applied extension wears a small AI chip on the timeline, so you can tell it apart from the clip it continues.
Write a continuation prompt
The continuation starts where the clip stops, so write what changes from that moment.
- Name the next action: "The runner turns the corner and slows to a walk."
- Name the camera: "The camera keeps tracking from behind."
- Keep it short. A four-second extension has room for one idea.
- Leave the default "Continue naturally." when the action just needs to carry on.
Play across the join after you apply. If the match is off, undo and render another take.
Ask the assistant to extend
Select the clip and ask the AI assistant to "extend this clip". It picks the selected clip when you do not name one. Give it a length from the same set: 4, 6 or 8 seconds. If you ask for 5 seconds, the assistant comes back with the real options for you to choose from, and it never rounds the length silently. The assistant places the extension only if you ask for it in the cut, so the result waits on a card in the chat until you say so.
What to expect
- Extensions continue from the end of a clip.
- AI Extend needs a DepCut sign-in and spends credits for each render, including each Regenerate.
- Undo removes an applied extension from the timeline. Credits already spent stay spent.
Give it a go
Pick the shortest clip in your DepCut project, open AI Extend from its clip menu, and preview a six-second continuation.
