Fix a video, audio or image file that will not import

You pick a file in Media, press Upload, and the grid stays empty. DepCut reads each file in your browser before it adds it, so a file that fails that step never reaches the timeline. Work through four causes, starting with the cheapest to check.
Check the file type
DepCut imports video, audio and image files. It recognizes a file by its type or its extension:
- Video: .mp4, .mov, .m4v, .webm, .mkv
- Audio: .mp3, .m4a, .aac, .wav, .ogg, .flac
- Image: .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .webp, .gif, .avif, .bmp
A document, a project file or a subtitle file adds nothing, and no message appears. If your file is one of those, it needs a different route. Export a video or audio version of it from the app that made it, then upload that.
The browser cannot decode the video
DepCut checks the picture and sound of a video before it adds the clip. Footage in a format your browser cannot decode is refused at that point, and no tile appears. The extension can look right while the contents are unusual.
- Double-click the file on your computer, or drag it into a browser tab, and see whether it plays there.
- If it does not play, re-export it from your camera app or editor as a standard MP4 or MOV.
- Upload the new file.
DepCut is still reading it
While files are being read, the Media grid shows a dashed tile labeled Importing… with a running timer. Large files take longer, and a multi-file drop handles files one at a time. Wait for the tile to turn into a thumbnail before you try again.
The upload stalled
In a Cloud project, a file shows up and plays before its bytes finish copying to project storage. A thin line runs along the bottom of its tile while the copy goes out. If the copy fails, the strip changes to Upload failed with a Retry link. Look at the top bar too. A red 1 import failed with its own Retry reports the same problem and holds Export back.
- Press Retry on the tile or in the top bar.
- Wait for the label beside the project name to read Saved.
- If it fails again, check your connection and press Retry once more.
Until the copy lands, Save to library in the tile's More actions menu stays grayed out.
Where the new file lands
Pressing Upload appends each video to the end of the main track. Dropping files onto the Media panel stocks them in the grid and leaves the timeline alone, which can look like a failed import when you expected a clip. Files dropped straight onto the timeline land at the pointer. Look at the end of the main track before you assume a file went missing.
One more try
Check the extension first, then the Importing… tile, then the top bar. Open DepCut and upload the file again once the cause is clear.
