Hide a Caption Track for One Export Without Losing It

Captions are burned into an exported video. Sometimes you want a second version of the same edit with no burned-in words, or with one language only. DepCut has two ways to hide captions, and they behave differently.
Show subtitles hides everything
In the Subtitles tab, open Options. The first control is the Show subtitles switch. It is on by default.
Turn it off and the captions leave the video. The caption row also leaves the timeline. Your captions stay in the project, so turning the switch on again brings back every line, with its timing, in place.
Use this switch when you want the whole project quiet, both while you edit and when you export.
The eye button hides one track
Each caption track has its own eye button in the timeline.
- Find the caption row under your clips. The captions appear as yellow-orange bars.
- Look at the left edge of the timeline, beside the caption row, for an eye button. Its name is Hide track.
- Click it. The bars turn gray and faded, and the captions disappear from the preview.
- Click the same button, now named Show track, to bring them back.
The captions stay on the timeline, grayed out, where you can still see their timing and select them. They are left out of the picture. The preview and the export follow the same rule, so a hidden track does not show in the preview and is not burned into the export.
Which one to use
- Use the eye button when you want the captions to stay visible on the timeline while you export without them. The bars give you a reminder that they exist.
- Use Show subtitles when you want a clear timeline too.
Export two versions of one edit
- Finish your edit and your captions.
- Click the eye button on the caption row so the track is hidden. Play a few seconds to confirm the preview shows no captions.
- Export the video. This is your clean version.
- Click the eye button again to show the track.
- Export a second time. This version carries the captions.
The two files come from the same edit, so they match shot for shot. Keep the clean version if you want to add words in another tool or reuse the video in another project.
Hiding a track is an edit like any other, so it goes onto the undo history. If you hide the wrong track, undo it.
Projects with more than one language
A project can carry up to three caption tracks, one per language. Each track has its own row and its own eye button. Hide all but one to export a version in a single language. Show them all to export a version with every language on screen.
Each language track keeps its own position in the frame, and by default the tracks stack upward so the lines do not overlap. The DepCut AI assistant is the tool that adds a language track.
Export your clean cut
Open your captioned project in DepCut, hide the caption track with the eye button, and export a copy with no burned-in text.
