Name your projects so a video series stays in order

A series piles up quickly. After a few episodes you have a stack of projects, a stack of exports and a grid full of tiles that all look alike. The project name is the one label you control, and DepCut uses it in more places than you might expect. A good pattern takes a moment to set.
Where the name shows up
- On each tile in the Projects gallery and in the Name column of list view.
- In the editor's top bar, where you click it to rename.
- In the small exports card in the corner of the screen, one row per export.
- As the name of the exported file.
What the export file name does with it
The file is the project name plus .mp4. DepCut makes three changes first:
- It removes these characters:
/ \ : * ? " < > | - It trims spaces at the ends and cuts the name to its first 60 characters.
- If the name ends up empty, the file is called export.
A second export from the same project becomes "Name 2.mp4", then "Name 3.mp4", so a new render never overwrites an old one. A project called "Tips 03: Captions" exports as "Tips 03 Captions.mp4".
Pick a pattern
Put the part that tells episodes apart near the front, and give the number a fixed width. For example:
- Tips 01 Trim clips
- Tips 02 Add captions
- Tips 10 Export checks
Two reasons for this order:
- The Projects page sorts by last edit, so a project jumps to the front each time you touch it. A leading series name and number let you spot the right tile at a glance.
- On a narrow screen the top bar shows only the first seven characters of a name and then an ellipsis. "Tips 01" fits exactly, and the topic can trail.
Zero-padding keeps files in order when you copy them into a file manager, where "Tips 10" would otherwise land before "Tips 2".
Rename in two places
- In the editor, click the project name in the top bar. Type the new name and press Enter. Esc cancels.
- On the Projects page, open Project actions on a tile and choose Rename. Type the name and press Rename. An empty name keeps the old one.
Rename before you export. The file name is built from the project name at the time you render.
Folders and copies
Names tell episodes apart, and a folder keeps a whole series in one place. Create a folder named for the series with New folder, then drag the tiles in. Inside a folder, New project creates the next episode right there.
Duplicate names the copy "Name copy" and files it beside the original. Rename it straight away so two near-identical tiles never share a label. A pattern like "Tips 03 v2" or "Tips 03 delivery" reads better than a string of copies.
Set the pattern today
Open DepCut, go to the Projects page and rename the last three episodes to match your new pattern.
