Pick the right model for the DepCut Agent
by DepCut Team
Published: October 30, 2026
Open the Agent and you can start typing at once, because it begins on a model that runs on your DepCut account. The picker in the message box lets you switch to another model whenever a job calls for it. This guide covers what the groups mean and what changes when you switch.
Open the picker
Click Agent in the top bar, or press Cmd+J (Ctrl+J on Windows). At the bottom left of the message box you will see a sparkle icon, a model name and a small chevron. Click it to open the list.
The five groups
Models are grouped by where they run.
- Gemini, OpenAI and Anthropic run on DepCut's hosted models. They need your DepCut sign-in and they spend account credits. The Mac app is optional for all three.
- Claude Code and Codex run through your own login for those tools, by way of the DepCut Mac app. These two groups appear only when the Mac app is connected and finds the tool installed. When they are missing, the list shows only the hosted groups, and a saved choice from a missing group moves to a hosted model.
The same model name can appear under two groups. Sonnet 5, for example, is listed under both Claude Code and Anthropic. The group tells you where it runs and who pays for it.
A new account starts on the Gemini model. Your pick is remembered on that browser from then on.
Switch models
- Click the model name at the bottom left of the message box.
- Click a model, or press its number (1 to 9) while the list is open. Each row shows its number at the right edge.
- Type your request and send it.
The star on a row marks a favorite, which helps you spot the models you reach for most. If a provider is unavailable, the problem shows up in the thread when you send. A hosted model asks you to sign in to your DepCut account, and a Claude Code or Codex model tells you what that tool reported.
What changes and what stays the same
Every model sees the same project snapshot and has the same tools. Switching changes which model does the reasoning and where its usage is billed: hosted models spend DepCut credits, and Claude Code and Codex use your own login.
Edits from the Agent are grouped by turn. One press of Undo, or Cmd+Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows), reverts everything the Agent did in its last turn. That makes a side-by-side test easy:
- Ask the Agent for an edit, such as tightening the opening.
- Press Undo once to restore the cut.
- Switch the model and send the same request.
- Keep the result you prefer.
Generated media follows other rules. Undo removes a clip from the timeline, and the credits already spent stay spent. Run model comparisons on edits, and save generation requests for the model you have settled on.
Switching inside a thread
A thread keeps a separate session for each provider. A Gemini model can pick up any thread. A Claude Code or Codex model that has not been in the thread starts from your newest message and the current project. When you change models for a new job, click the plus icon (New chat) so the new model starts clean, and use the clock icon (Past threads) to return to an old conversation.
Choose one and ask
Open DepCut, press Cmd+J or Ctrl+J, and run one request on two different models.
