Replace or delete a transition on a cut in DepCut

Once a cut carries a transition, you have three ways to change it. You can restyle it, replace it with a dragged tile, or delete it. Each one leaves different settings behind, so it helps to know which route keeps what.
Select the transition first
Click the filled round button on the cut. The Transitions tab opens, the tile of the current style wears a ring, and the Duration slider and the Crossfade audio switch appear at the top of the tab. A selected transition has no panel on the right, so everything you need is in this tab.
Replace it by clicking another tile
With the transition selected, click a different tile. The style changes in place:
- The Duration stays as it was.
- The Crossfade audio switch keeps its setting.
- The clips keep the same overlap, so nothing after the cut moves.
- The cut plays back with a short run-up and run-out, so you see the new style on your own footage.
Each click is one step in the undo history. Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) to go back to the previous style.
Replace it by dragging a tile onto the cut
You can also drag a tile from the tab down to the timeline. The tile snaps to the nearest cut within reach. The round button there grows, and a dashed slot shows the length the transition will take, in seconds.
Dropping onto a cut that already has a transition removes the old one and adds the new one in a single undo step. The new transition takes the length of the one it replaces, and it ends up selected. It starts with Crossfade audio off, so look at the switch if you had turned it on.
Delete the transition
- Select the transition by clicking its round button.
- Press Delete or Backspace.
The cut becomes a plain cut. The clips stop overlapping, so the later clip, along with the titles, captions and sound that start at or after it, slides later by the length of the old overlap. The edit gets longer by the same amount. Undo puts the transition and the timing back in one step.
The Duration slider stops at 0.1 seconds, and it cannot reach zero. Deleting is the way back to a hard cut.
Choose the route
- To keep the timing and the audio setting and change only the look, click another tile.
- To start the cut fresh at the same length, drag a tile onto it.
- To remove the blend and let the edit grow back, delete the transition.
If a Dip or a Flash feels too heavy once you have seen it in context, try the same cut with a Cross fade by clicking its tile. You lose nothing, and one undo returns the heavier look.
Make the swap
Open DepCut, select a transition you already added and click through two other tiles. Keep the one that fits, or press Delete and let the plain cut decide.
