Resize Captions With the Size Slider and Reset to Style

Every caption style starts at a size of its own, and one slider changes it. The slider sits in the Options tab of the Subtitles panel, along with a button that undoes your changes.
Find the slider
- Open the Subtitles tab in the left panel. The Content, Styles and Options tabs appear once the project has captions.
- Open Options.
- Drag Size. The number beside the slider shows pixels, such as 42 px.
- To enter an exact value, click the number and type.
The range runs from 24 to 120 px. One value applies to every caption track in the project, and the preview updates as you drag.
Starting sizes
Each style begins at its own size, so the slider shows a different number when you pick a different style:
- Minimal: 36 px.
- Typewriter: 38 px.
- Clean, Editorial, Highlighter and Bubblegum: 42 px.
- Block: 44 px.
- Curiosity hook and Neon: 46 px.
- Big & punchy: 50 px.
Sizes are measured against a frame whose shorter side is 1080 px, whatever aspect ratio the project uses.
What size does to your line breaks
Captions wrap so that every line stays inside the frame. A larger size fits fewer words on a line, so a caption that took one line at 42 px may take two at 60 px. A narrower frame, such as a vertical one, fits fewer words per line than a widescreen frame at the same size.
Two lines read comfortably. Three lines start to cover the picture. If your captions run long, lower the size or split the longest captions in the Content tab. To split one, click in the text where the break should fall and press Enter.
Find the right size
- Pause on the longest caption you can find. The Content tab shows each caption with a time chip, and clicking the chip moves the playhead there.
- Drag Size until that caption sits in two lines or fewer.
- Play a stretch of the video and watch how the caption sits against the picture.
- Check a shot with a lot of detail behind the caption. Size changes how much of the picture the caption covers.
A new style keeps your size
Picking a style in Styles hands the font back to the style. Your size stays as you set it. If you set 60 px on Clean and then pick Minimal, the captions remain at 60 px, and the same goes for Highlight spoken word.
This is useful when you want one size across several styles you are comparing. It can also leave you with a number you forgot about. When a style looks off after a switch, check Size first.
The Reset to style button in Options clears your font, size and spoken-word settings in one step, and the captions return to the style's own look. The button is dimmed while nothing has been changed, so a dimmed button tells you the captions already follow the style.
Try a few sizes
Open a project with captions in DepCut, drag Size up and down on your longest caption, and settle on a number that fits in two lines.
