How to Review and Fix a Video Draft Before You Export

A first draft always has problems you cannot see while building it. You know what every shot is meant to say, so your eye fills in what the picture leaves out. A review pass puts you in the viewer's seat. It has four steps: watch, walk the edits, fix, and test.
Watch it straight through
Press Home to return to the start and Space to play. Resist the urge to stop and fix. A viewer meets your video from the first frame with no notes, so let it run once and write down the time of each snag. The timecode beside the play button shows where you are. Watch for places where your attention drifts, a line you could not follow, or a moment that arrives too soon.
Walk every edit point
Pause at the start and use the Up and Down arrow keys. Each press jumps to the next or previous clip edge on any track. At every stop, step a few frames with the left and right arrows and play a second or two across the join. Check for:
- A jump in the picture that nothing explains.
- A change in loudness or room tone at the cut.
- A flash of black. An empty stretch on the main track plays black. Right-click the empty space and choose Remove empty space to close it.
- A title or caption that sits on a face or runs too long to read.
- A first or last word clipped by a trim.
Click Fit in the timeline toolbar for a view of the whole edit. Empty rows and stray clips show up at a glance.
Fix in order of weight
Work from the biggest problem to the smallest, because a structural change moves everything under it.
- Structure: shots in the wrong order or a missing shot.
- Pacing: slow stretches to trim or speed up.
- Sound: levels, clipped words and music that competes with speech.
- Graphics: titles, captions and transitions.
- Color: matching shots and any final look.
If a fix makes things worse, click Undo in the timeline toolbar, or press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac).
Test with a fast export
Click Export in the top bar and choose Draft · 720p, the fastest render, then click Export video. The render runs in the background and you can keep editing. When it finishes, the file appears under Media, in Assets, in the Exports list.
Click the export to open Preview as a post. The buttons at the top switch between Original, which plays the file at its own size, and TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, which play it inside a phone with that platform's overlays. Check that titles and captions stay clear of the interface elements. The preview starts muted, so click the speaker button to hear the mix.
Make the final export
When the draft holds up, open Export again. Original · matches source and Best · 1080p give the highest quality, and Quick share · 1080p gives a smaller file. Watch the finished file once more before you publish it.
Run the routine
Run the routine on your next draft in DepCut: one straight watch, one pass through the edit points, and one Draft · 720p export.
