Tighten Your Edit and Fix Slow Pacing in DepCut

A video feels slow when shots outstay their purpose, and rushed when nothing gets room to land. Pacing is the balance between the two, and most of it is built by trimming. Start by finding where the cut drags, then work through the fixes below in order.
Find where it drags
Play the cut once from the start and note the moments where your attention drifts. Then click Fit in the timeline toolbar (its tooltip reads Fit timeline to window) to see the whole edit at once. A long clip stands out by its width. A row of clips of identical width gives a steady, mechanical beat, which suits some videos and wears on others.
Trim heads and tails
Clips often begin before anything happens and run on after it is over. Move the playhead to the first useful frame and click the toolbar button titled Split and drop the left side. Move to the last useful frame and click Split and drop the right side. On a project with only a main track, the footage after the cut slides left to close the space.
Remove dead air in the middle
- Put the playhead at the start of the pause or stumble and press S.
- Move to where the good material resumes and press S again.
- Click the middle piece on the timeline and press Delete.
Clips, titles, captions and soundtrack after the deleted piece slide left together, so everything stays in sync. Keep a short breath of silence between sentences. Speech cut tight against speech sounds rushed.
Once you have layered clips on tracks above the main one, Delete leaves a gap in place. Right-click the empty space and choose Remove empty space. That closes the gap on its own row and leaves the other rows where they are.
Change speed
Select a clip and open the Speed tab. The slider runs from 0.25× to 4×. Speed up travel, setup and anything the viewer already understands. Slow down the single moment you want them to feel. The same tab has a Speed curve for ramping the rate inside one clip.
Vary the rhythm and play it back
- Let short shots build energy and long shots let a moment settle.
- Give the shot that carries your main idea the most time.
- After a run of quick cuts, hold one shot a little longer so the viewer can breathe.
- Keep the last beat of the video. Trimming the ending too hard leaves it feeling cut off.
Press Home to return to the start and Space to play. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to jump from one clip edge to the next and judge each shot's length by feel. A shot that makes you wait is a candidate for a trim or a speed-up.
Start with one pass
Open a draft in DepCut and tighten every clip's head and tail first. That one pass often fixes most of the drag.
