What the DepCut AI assistant can and cannot do
by DepCut Team

The AI assistant in DepCut works through a fixed set of tools. Most of them mirror a control you can use yourself in the editor, so the assistant's reach is the editor's reach. Knowing the list helps you ask for things it can finish.
What it can see and hear
Before it edits, the assistant can look at your project:
- It reads the full state of the cut: clips, soundtrack, titles, shapes, stickers, subtitles, selection, playhead and publish details.
- It reads the edit log, which records each change that has landed on the cut, so it can explain how the project reached its current shape.
- It watches footage by sampling frames into contact sheets and noting where scenes change.
- It listens to audio, finds silent stretches, and captures the frame at the playhead.
That is how it can answer "what is in this video?" or find dead air before it cuts.
What it can edit
- Timeline. Split, trim, move and place clips, change speed, reverse a clip, close gaps, add overlay video, freeze a frame, and set how a clip fits the frame.
- Graphics. Add titles, shapes, stickers and effects, set animations and keyframes, style single words in a title, and set transitions between clips.
- Subtitles. Generate subtitles, translate a track, add tracks, restyle captions, and edit single cues.
- Sound. Set volume and fades, duck music under speech, generate voiceovers and music, and read subtitles aloud.
- Project. Change the aspect ratio, rename the project, fill in publish details, and file media into Media or the Library.
What it can make and fetch
- Images, video clips, talking-character clips, continuations with AI Extend, and whole narrated scenes.
- Stock footage and images from the bundled catalog, which cost nothing.
- Media from a link. Give it a video link, a social post or a web page and it imports what the source holds. A page of pure text comes back as text it can read and quote.
Generated media previews on a card in the chat. You drag it onto the timeline, or ask for it in the cut.
Where you stay in charge
- Credits. Generation spends credits, so the assistant generates media only when you ask for the media itself. A scene plan waits for your approval before any shot renders.
- Your cut. It adds media without deleting, trimming or reordering clips you did not mention.
- Your frame. It changes the aspect ratio only when you ask for a different shape.
- Export. It opens the export dialog, and you start the render.
- Transcripts. It does not invent a transcript for footage with no speech.
What it cannot do
- Edit inside a clip at the object level, such as recoloring, removing or replacing one thing across frames. No model is connected for that.
- Continue a clip from its start. AI Extend runs from the end of a clip, in set lengths of 4, 6 or 8 seconds.
- Render readable text inside AI video. Video models garble lettering, so scene plans keep on-screen text to a word or two. Use titles and subtitles for exact wording.
- Run two scene productions at once. One scene run goes at a time.
Test the list
Open the AI assistant in DepCut, ask "What can you edit in this project?", and try one request from each group above. Name the result you want, and point at a clip with a selection or an @ mention.
