Where a DepCut project lives and how to choose

Every DepCut project has a home, and you pick it when you create the project. The two homes are On this Mac and Cloud. This post covers what each one means, where the switch is, and how to tell which home a project is in.
What a cloud project is
A cloud project is stored on DepCut's servers and belongs to your account. Sign in on any browser and the same project opens there. Cloud needs no install, so it is available as soon as you are signed in. Sharing a project with a link is a cloud feature, and the Share button only appears on cloud projects.
What a project on your Mac is
A project on your Mac needs the DepCut Mac app. The app sits in your menu bar and runs a local engine. The engine keeps the project and its media on your Mac's disk, in a DepCut folder inside your Movies folder, so you can find the files in Finder. In the editor's Media panel, the menu on a media card also has Show in Finder.
Every DepCut account that signs in on that Mac sees the same local projects. The app has to be running to open them.
Choose where new projects go
- Open the Dashboard.
- On the New Project card, click the small button in the top right corner. It shows a laptop or a cloud icon and a chevron.
- Pick On this Mac or Cloud.
Hover over the button and the tooltip says that all new projects and media will be stored on the home you picked. That one choice applies across the editor in that browser. The New project button on the Projects page follows it, and so do files you add to the Library. DepCut remembers the choice until you change it.
Two rules apply:
- The switch appears when you are signed in and the Mac app is running. Without the app, every new project is a cloud project.
- Inside an open folder on the Projects page, a new project goes to the folder's home, because a project can only be filed into a folder in the same home.
See where each project is
When both homes are available, every project card carries a small icon. In gallery view it sits at the bottom left of the card, and in list view it sits beside the name. A cloud icon marks a cloud project and a laptop marks a project on your Mac. Hover over it to read "This is a cloud project" or "This is a local project".
Close the Mac app and the local projects stay in the list. The hover text changes to "This is a local project — open the DepCut app to edit it", and their menus are hidden until the app is back.
Which home to pick
- Pick Cloud if you edit from more than one computer, or if you want to share a link.
- Pick On this Mac if you want the files on your own disk, visible in Finder.
A project can change homes later. A move copies it across and removes the original.
Open the editor
Create a project from the Dashboard in DepCut, then check the icon on its card on the Projects page.
