AI video editor for Mac: what an AI assistant can do in your edit

"AI video editor" can mean many things. Some tools only generate short clips from a prompt. Others add one smart filter to an old editor. DepCut is a full timeline editor for Mac with an AI assistant built in, so the AI works on your actual project.
Two kinds of AI in one editor
An assistant that edits. You type, or dictate, what you want. The assistant reads the state of your cut, watches your footage, listens to the audio, and then makes the change on the timeline.
Generators that make media. Create images, video clips, voiceovers, music and sound effects, then drop them straight into your cut.
What the assistant can do
- Clean up a talking-head video. It finds silent stretches and cuts the dead air.
- Add and style captions. It generates subtitles, translates them and restyles them.
- Mix sound. It sets volume and fades and ducks music under speech.
- Build graphics. It adds titles, shapes, stickers, transitions and animations.
- Reframe. It changes the aspect ratio when you ask for a new shape.
- Fill in publish details. It writes the caption and tags for your post.
It works with the tools you can see in the editor, so anything it does, you can adjust by hand. It also stays out of your way: it does not delete or reorder clips you did not mention, and it opens the export dialog without starting the render for you. More in edit your project by asking the AI assistant.
What the generators can make
- AI video clips from a text prompt or a still image. See generate AI video clips.
- AI Extend to lengthen a clip that ends too soon.
- AI images for thumbnails, B-roll and backgrounds.
- AI voiceovers from a script. See generate an AI voiceover.
- Music and sound effects that match the mood of a scene.
- Dubbing into another language.
- Narrated scenes built from a short brief. See turn a brief into a narrated video.
Why it matters on a Mac
The free DepCut Mac app lets the browser editor use your Mac's hardware. Projects can live on your own disk, exports run through the app's bundled encoder, and dictation runs on the machine. If you already use the Claude or Codex apps on your Mac, DepCut's assistant can work through them with no API keys to set up.
What it costs
The editor is free. AI generation uses credits: the Pro plan includes monthly credits, and you can buy more at any time. Editing, effects, transitions and export never use credits. Read how AI credits work for the details.
Try a real edit
Open DepCut, drop in a clip of someone talking, and ask the assistant: "Cut the silences and add captions." Then check its work on the timeline.
