Edit videos with Claude or Codex on your Mac, no API key needed

Chat assistants such as Claude and Codex are good at planning, writing and reasoning about a task. On their own they cannot open a timeline and cut your video. DepCut connects them to a real video editor, so the assistant you already pay for can do the editing.
How it works
DepCut is a video editor that runs in your browser. The free DepCut Mac app links that browser editor to your Mac. When you have the Claude or Codex app signed in on the same Mac, DepCut's assistant can use it.
There are no API keys to create, paste or pay for separately. The assistant runs through your own login, so its chat does not use your DepCut credits.
What you can ask it to do
Once connected, the assistant works on your project with the editor's own tools:
- "Cut every pause longer than half a second."
- "Add captions and translate them into Spanish."
- "Lower the music whenever someone is talking."
- "Add a title that says Day 1 for the first three seconds."
- "Make this a vertical video for Shorts."
- "Write a caption and five hashtags for this post."
It can watch your footage and listen to the audio before it acts, so it can answer questions such as "where does the speaker mention pricing?" See the full list in what the DepCut AI assistant can and cannot do.
What still uses credits
Your Claude or Codex login covers the assistant's thinking and editing. Media generation runs on DepCut's hosted models and uses DepCut credits, whoever starts it. That includes AI images, video clips, voiceovers, music and subtitles. Read how AI credits work.
Set it up
- Install and sign in to the Claude or Codex app on your Mac.
- Install the free DepCut Mac app and keep it running in the menu bar.
- Open DepCut in your browser and sign in.
- Open a project and start a chat with the assistant.
If the editor shows a banner saying it cannot reach the Mac app, start the app and the page reconnects on its own.
Tips for better results
- Name the result you want. "Make it under 60 seconds" works better than "make it better".
- Point at what you mean. Select a clip, or @ mention it, before you ask.
- Ask for a plan first. For larger jobs, ask the assistant to describe its plan before it edits.
- Review on the timeline. Every change is a normal edit you can adjust or undo.
Use the AI you already have
If you already pay for Claude or Codex, open DepCut with the Mac app running and give it your first editing job.
