Hook a Viewer With a Number in the First Caption

A number in the first caption tells the viewer exactly what they are getting. "3 edits that save an hour" or "One setting for cleaner audio" both set a size for the video before it starts. Numbers are quick to read, they stand out from words, and they suggest a clear structure.
Why numbers help
A number turns a vague topic into a defined list. A viewer can decide in a second whether the list is worth their time. It also gives them something to track: if the caption says three tips, they know when the video is nearly done. That sense of progress keeps people watching.
Pick a number you can deliver
The number must match the video. If you promise five, show five. If one idea carries the video, say "one". Small numbers read better than large ones in a short video, and they leave room for each point to breathe. Pick the count first, then plan the shots so each item gets a clear beat.
Choose a phrasing
A few shapes work well:
- "3 mistakes in your first edit"
- "One cut that fixes slow videos"
- "2 minutes to cleaner sound"
- "Step 1 of 4"
Say what the number counts. A bare "5" gives the viewer nothing to hold, while "5 quick fixes" tells them what is coming.
Put it in the first caption
You can place a line as a title or build it into your captions.
- Press T in DepCut to add a title that reads "Your text".
- Change its words in the Text tab or by double-clicking the title in the preview.
- Keep the line to a handful of words and set it to appear on the first frame.
If you use generated captions, open the Styles section in the Subtitles tab. Curiosity hook is one of the built-in styles, and it makes the first caption bigger, which helps an opening line with a number stand out.
Make each item easy to find
When the video moves through a list, mark each point on screen. A short label such as "Fix 2" at the start of each section helps viewers who rejoin mid-video. Keep each label in the same position and style so the list feels organized.
Keep the numbers honest
If you say "in two minutes", the process should take about that long. If you say "3 tips" and give two, the viewer notices. Check your list against your caption before you export.
End with the count
Close with a short recap such as "That is all three". The recap confirms the promise and gives the viewer a sense of closure.
